Cube notation is the language solvers use to describe moves. Once you understand the basic letters, a move string becomes much less intimidating.
The six main letters are based on the faces of the cube as you are holding it.
- U: Up face.
- D: Down face.
- R: Right face.
- L: Left face.
- F: Front face.
- B: Back face.
Clockwise and counterclockwise
A plain letter means turn that face clockwise as if you were looking directly at that face. For example, R means turn the right face clockwise.
An apostrophe means counterclockwise. So R' means turn the right face counterclockwise.
A 2 means turn the face twice. R2 means a half turn of the right face.
Why orientation matters
The letters always refer to the cube's current orientation. If the app says F, that means the front face in the preview. If you rotate the whole cube in your hand, the front face changes unless you match the preview again.
This is the most common reason a correct move string fails in real life.
How animation helps
Rubix Solver shows the moves visually so you do not have to decode every symbol at full speed. You can still learn notation, but the animation gives you a safety net while practicing.
